The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) launched GOBARdhan, the Central Sector Scheme for the development of the compressed biogas (CBG) sector on October 1, 2026.
The scheme was approved by the Union Cabinet on August 6, 2026, with an outlay of Rs 237.31 billion, spanning a ten-year framework from FY 2026-27 to FY 2035-36.
It targets to raise CBG production to around 5 million standard cubic meters per day (mscmd), a ten-fold rise. The GOBARdhan scheme comprises of six key interventions including a CBG offtake assurance, CBG pricing framework, capital assistance for CBG projects, the development of pipeline infrastructure, credit guarantee support and the CBG ecosystem challenge fund. The launch also unveiled the GOBARdhan Handbook and the Unified GOBARdhan Portal.
