Torrent Gas Limited has decided to incur an investment of Rs 50 billion on the development of city gas distribution infrastructure in Chennai. It has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Government of Tamil Nadu for development of city gas infrastructure at the Growth and Investment Conclave in Chennai.

The firm will lay pipelines and other infrastructure in Chennai and Tiruvallur districts, covering an area of 3,569 square km, to provide piped natural gas connections to domestic, industrial and commercial establishments. In addition, it will also set up the infrastructure to dispense compressed natural gas (CNG) to automobiles. Under the first phase of the project, the firm plans to commission more than 30 CNG stations in Chennai and Tiruvallur districts in the last quarter of 2020-21.

Torrent Gas Limited has recently commissioned the first CNG station in Tamil Nadu at Nagapattinam and commenced the pipeline works. It has been awarded city gas license for 16 geographical areas spread across 32 districts covering seven states and one union territory, including Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Puducherry.
