As per Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG), the share of natural gas in the energy mix is likely to increase from present 6 per cent to 15 per cent by 2030.

Various initiatives undertaken to ensure the same include expansion of national gas grid pipeline, expansion of city gas distribution (CGD) network, setting up liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals, allocation of domestic gas to compressed natural gas (CNG)/ piped natural gas (PNG) in not cut category, allowing marketing and pricing freedom to gas produced from high pressure areas, deep water and ultra-deep water and from coal seams, sustainable alternative towards affordable transportation initiative to promote bio-CNG among others.
