Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) in collaboration with the World Bank has initiated study for hydrogen transmission in natural gas pipelines and city gas distribution (CGD) networks.

The study comprises mapping demand and supply of hydrogen, technical assessment of the existing pipeline network for its compatibility, commercial assessment of pipeline sector, identifying bottlenecks in policy and regulatory framework and framing of roadmap milestones till 2040 for expeditious implementation of hydrogen blending in the country.

The study is likely to be completed within 16 weeks.

Moreover, the regulatory frameworks would be amended to achieve the national target of 5 million metric tonnes per annum (mmtpa) hydrogen consumption by 2030.

Besides, PNGRB has permitted three CGD companies to undertake trial blending projects in their respective authorised geographical areas.
