According to GAIL (India) Limited, India is expected to witness an increase in share of natural gas in its energy basket rise to 10 per cent by 2025. There has been a massive investment push in the creation of gas infrastructure to provide the environment-friendly fuel to consumers. As a result, the gas demand in India is growing at CAGR of 8 per cent.

India is investing in the expansion of pipeline network and building import capacities to meet growing gas demand in the country. Besides, it is expanding city gas distribution networks to raise the share of gas as a transportation fuel as well as kitchen fuel.

Currently, the total natural gas pipeline network in India is about 17,500 km, of which 12,500 km is operated by GAIL. The share of natural gas stands at about 6.2 per cent in the entire energy consumption basket of the country. The government has set a target to raise the share of natural gas in the energy basket to 15 per cent by 2030 to bring down carbon emissions.
