Kolkata is expected to get piped natural gas (PNG) connection from May2022. The city is the only metropolitan in India which is yet to have a piped gas infrastructure. A joint venture between GAIL and Greater Calcutta has started working on pipeline connections for cooking gas in some complexes in the city. Natural gas comes in tankers from Durgapur for compressed natural gas (CNG) stations which is now being used for PNG as well. The joint venture company will invest Rs 50 billion in five years to build gas grid and CNG stations in the city. The company is also planning to provide PNG connections to 1.4 million households in the coming five years.
