In line with the National Hydrogen Mission, Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) has commenced hydrogen blending as a pilot project for establishing the techno-commercial feasibility of blending hydrogen in the city gas distribution network. In Indore, Madhya Pradesh, GAIL commenced injection of grey hydrogen at the city gate station and plans on replacing it by green hydrogen, subsequently. Moreover, the company has obtained the necessary regulatory permission for commencing the project.

The project is a stepping stone for India’s journey towards hydrogen-based and carbon-neutral future and the state gas utility has started the project of mixing hydrogen into the natural gas system at Indore. The hydrogen-blended natural gas will be supplied to Avantika Gas Limited for retailing compressed natural gas to automobiles and piped natural gas to households in Indore.
