The union government has inaugurated 201 compressed natural gas (CNG) stations across 52 geographic areas (GA) in 17 states. 

The stations developed by 15 city gas distribution (CGD) entities of GAIL Group include 53 of GAIL Gas Limited, 50 of Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL), 43 of GAIL (India) Limited, 20 of Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL), four of Avantika Gas Limited, three each of Central UP Gas Limited and Green Gas Limited, two each of Bengal Gas Company Limited and Purba Bharati Gas Limited while one each of Goa Natural Gas Private Limited, Tripura Natural Gas Company Limited, Vadodara Gas Limited.

Additionally, it has also inaugurated the country’s first small scale liquefied natural gas (LNG) unit at GAIL’s Vijaipur liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) plant entailing an investment of Rs 1.5 billion.

Besides, the number of CNG stations across the country is likely to increase to around 17,500 by 2030 along with providing piped natural gas (PNG) connectivity to around 120 million domestic customers.
