In a notable development, two compressed natural gas (CNG) pumps were commercially launched in Kolkata on March 22, 2021. One of the pumps has been set up in New Town by Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), while another one has been set up in Garia by Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL). The CNG to these pumps is being supplied by the Bengal Gas Company, a joint venture between GAIL and the West Bengal government.

The Bengal Gas Company has installed the dispensers, whereas the oil marketing companies have provided space and other infrastructure. Further, another five to six CNG pumps are expected to be launched in the city soon. IOC is expected to set up 20 CNG pumps in FY 2022, while BPCL and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited are also expected to add a similar number of pumps together.
