Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has commenced supply of compressed biogas (CBG) to commercial gas distribution companies from its waste-to-energy plant developed in partnership with Biofics, an infrastructure developer.

The plant is currently processing around 50 tonnes per day (tpd) waste to produce 2 tpd CBG. At full design capacity, the plant is expected to process 120 tpd waste and produce up to 5tpd CBG. The waste is sourced from around 500 bulk generators including hotels, residential societies, commercial complexes, vegetable markets and institutional kitchens.

Besides, the plant also produces slurry which is processed into organic fertiliser for sustainable farming.
