In a notable development, Chhattisgarh Biofuel Development Authority (CBDA) has signed tripartite agreement with GAIL (India) Limited and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) for the production of compressed bio-gas (CBG) from urban solid waste generated by six municipal corporations in the state.

Under the agreement, GAIL will establish CBG plants in Ambikapur, Raigarh, and Korba, while BPCL will implement the project in Bilaspur, Dhamtari, and Rajnandgaon municipal corporations.

Besides, GAIL and BPCL are expected to invest approximately Rs 6 billion.

The initiative aims to process approximately 350 metric tonnes (mt) of solid waste and 500 mt of surplus biomass daily from these corporations to produce around 70 mt of CBG per day.
