The work of laying underground piped natural gas (PNG) pipelines in Chandigarh is now expected to be completed by 2021-22. The work, which was earlier scheduled to be substantially completed by March 2019, has been affected due to the Covid-induced lockdown and the subsequent labour force migration.

So far, only 22 sectors have been covered with piped network. Further, of the 26,436 customers registered for PNG supply, PNG installation has been completed in 19,039 households and 14,568 customers are using PNG supply for their day-to-day requirements.

The contract for the same was awarded to Indian Oil Adani Gas Private Limited (IOAGL), a joint venture company of Indian Oil Corporation Limited and Adani Gas Limited. The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board also allowed IOAGL to fix the final selling price of the piped gas. The scope of work in the contract involved laying pipelines in over 200 km in 22 sectors of Chandigarh, mainly the southern belt. According to reports, the sectors which have been gasified in Chandigarh are 32, 33, 34, 35, 37, 38, 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 46, 47, 48, 49, 50, 51, 63 CHB, Dhanas EWS housing, and Industrial Area Phase I and II. Meanwhile, work is in progress in Manimajra. The next phase of gasification will begin in the next 20 sectors.
