Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation is likely to sign an agreement with BPCL to develop a centralised compressed biogas (CBG) plant in the city.
Inspired by a successful Indore facility, the plant will span 10 acres and is expected to commence operations by April 2025. Besides, four possible locations have been shortlisted, with a final selection expected soon.
The feasibility study is complete, and once the location is confirmed, the land will be handed over to BPCL for construction of the plant. Additionally, there will be a tripartite agreement between the Municipal Corporation, BPCL and the landowner.
The CBG plant, to be set up on public-private partnership model, will serve as a central facility for processing biodegradable waste, supporting the city’s zero-waste initiative. However, the capacity will range between 100 and 200 tonnes, based on land availability.
