In a notable development, India’s natural gas consumption has started recovering in June 2021 after declining in the previous two months, as states ease restrictions in the wake of a drop in Covid-19 infections. Gas consumption in April and May 2021 fell by around 10 per cent and 15 per cent respectively.

Due to falling gas demand during April and May 2021, GAIL diverted two cargoes to international markets. However, the company is now confident that the country’s natural gas consumption could grow by six to eight per cent in financial year 2021-22.
