India recorded the highest ever sales of compressed natural gas (CNG) run passenger vehicles during the financial year (FY) 2020-21. Despite a fall in overall sales of passenger vehicles by 2.20 per cent during FY21, the sales of CNG vehicles rose by 57 per cent. Meanwhile, sales of diesel-based passenger vehicles have gone down to 17 per cent from 30 per cent during the same period.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and the gas industry are working aggressively on expanding CNG stations across the entire country. Despite a complete lockdown in the initial months of FY21, more than 700 stations were added during the year, registering a growth of more than 50 per cent.
