Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is planning to operationalise five bio-compressed natural gas (CNG) plants in Chennai, Tamil Nadu by December 2024.

The Sholinganallur bio-CNG plant is likely to be operational by June 2024 while Sholinganallur Phase-II, Madhavaram Phase-II, Koyambedu Phase-I and Phase-II by December 2024.

Each plant will have the capacity to process 100 tonnes wet waste for production of 4,000 kg biogas per day.

Greater Chennai generates around 2,100 tpd wet waste. With these plants, around one third of the wet waste is likely to be  utilised for production of bio-CNG.
