The construction work on the Panikhaiti-Noonmati stretch under the Barauni-Guwahati natural gas pipeline is still pending.
Although, in March 2024, the Union government inaugurated the project, GAIL (India) Limited is yet to commission the final stretch, delaying the supply of piped natural gas (PNG) to registered consumers.
Besides, Purba Bharati Gas Private Limited has laid 764.95 km of medium density polyethylene (MDPE) and 43.108 km of steel pipelines in Kamrup Metro and Kamrup districts. However, only 101 out of over 6,175 households with last-mile connectivity are receiving PNG, due to the delay in the GAIL pipeline.
The project is being developed by GAIL (India) Limited under the Pradhan Mantri Urja Ganga (PMUG) project. It involves laying of 718 km long natural gas pipeline between Barauni and Guwahati in the states of Bihar and Assam, respectively, which would link the north-eastern part of the country with the national grid to meet increasing fuel needs of households and factories in the region. It entails an investment of Rs 39.92 billion.
